It doesnt refer to separating bottles and cans from trash. It means being sent back to repeat an earlier part of your basic training. You may think that failing Air Force basic training is the biggest threat your training instructor (TI) can make, but you would be wrong. The biggest threat is recycling. What Is Recycling? When you are recycled in Air Force Basic Training, you are set back and have to repeat one or mora training weeks. It means you will be reassigned to a new training group and a new training instructor. If you are recycled in week two, you have to join a different unit who is starting week two. Recycling is very common.About 15 to 20 percent of recruits in AFBMT get recycled at one point or abedrngnisher. It costs the Air Force more money per recruit as you are in training for longer, but it ensures recr uits have been fully and properly trained upon graduation. How Is It Ordered? Training instructors will make you think that they can recycle you for any reason. They dont like the way you look, they dont like the way you grimace, or they dont like your breath. In actuality, training instructors dont have the authority on their own to recycle you. Thats up to the commanding officer.The commanding officer is limited by basic training regulations as to when he can and cannot recycle a recruit. It does not mean that you shouldnt take the recycling threat seriously. When deciding whether or not to recycle a recruit, the commander relies heavily on the recommendations of your TI. With as many as one out of five recruits being recycled at least once during their training, it shows it is a threat that they carry out. The Reasons It Can Happen Recycling isnt just used for disciplinary reasons. Its also used for recruits who fail a pass/fail requirement of basic. For example, if you f ail to qualify with the M-16 rifle on the firing range, you will get recycled. If you fail the finalPT test, you will be recycled. You could also be recycled for medical reasons. If you miss more than two or three days of training because of a medical condition, you will likely be recycled to make up for that training. For example, if you are hospitalized during week three of training, when the medical folks let you out, and certify you as fit for duty, you would likely be recycled to a different flight who is just entering week three of training. Air Force Pararescue Specialists, also known as PJs, hold an elite position not only in the Air Force but in the special forces community at large. With exhaustive training in combat tactics, rescue and extraction, and emergency medicine, PJs are charged with the motto That others may live, reflecting their commitment to risk life and limb behind enemy lines whenever a downed flight crew, or any servicemember, or ally, for that matter, needs rescuing. Military Requirements for Pararescue Airmen Prospective pararescue airmen must be male US citizens under the age of 28 and achieve a general technical score of at least 44 on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). But thats just the begi nning. (If youre older and trying to join Pararescue with prior military service under your belt, you can join so long as the difference between your actual age and the years you served tallies up to less than 28.) As Special Forces members serving on sensitive rescue missions, pararescue members must also be able to qualify for a secret security clearance. Physically, applicants must also have color vision correctable to 20/20, measure between 5-foot-4 and 6-foot-5, and be able to pass the Air Forces class 3 flight physical. Oh, and lets not forget being able to pass the Physical Abilities and Stamina Test (PAST) at least twice before shipping to boot camp Two 25-meter underwater swims in three-minute cycles500-meter swim in under 10 minutes and seven secondsA 1.5-mile run in under nine minutes and 47 secondsAt least ten pull-ups in one minuteAt least 54 sit-ups in two minutesNo less than 52 push-ups in 2 minute How Pararescue Specialists Are Trained for Service Following about two months in Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force kusine (AFB) Texas, new recruits whove made the initial cut for Pararescue still have a long road ahead of them The Air Force allows two years to prepare their special forces troops for actual duty (taking into account not only training days, but off-duty, administrative, and travel time.) According to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) website, the training pipeline is composed of eight different schools. It all begins with a nine-week Indoctrination Course at Lackland that seems like a combination of try-outs and a second boot camp, combining plenty of physically-punishing workouts with foundational basics like dive physics, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, weapons qualifications, PJ history, and leadership reaction course. Those that survive catch a flight to Georgia to attend Fort BenningsArmy Airborne School, a three-week joint-service course for parachuting basics. If falling isnt your biggest fear, try drowning next up are six weeks in Panama City, FL at the Air Force Combat Diver School and a day at Pensacolas Navy Underwater Egress training (where they teach you to escape from a drowning aircraft.) Further torture awaits at the two-week basic survival school atFairchild AFB and five more weeks of free-fall parachuting at North Carolina Army outpost Fort Bragg. Now, a little creative resume-writing could go a long way to convincing civilian employers that all of these totally Chuck Norris-like skills would be an asset to the company. (Just think of all the cash theyd save by having you run all of the team-building retreats.) But pararescue training also offers a real all-expenses-paid education that translates immediately to opportunity once you leave the service five-and-a-half months of medical training at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, that results in nationally-recognized certification as a Paramedic. Thats a step or two ahead of most entry-level Army medics or Navy corpsmen, who start out as basic emergency medical technicians if theyre lucky. The long road concludes at Kirtland with the six-month Pararescue Recovery Specialist Course, which brings all previous training to bear on the core mission of rescuing personnel downed behind enemy lines its there that PJs finally become experts at extrication basics, field tactics, mountaineering, combat tactics, advanced parachuting, and helicopter insertion/extraction, according to the AFSOC training pipeline.
